For Marc, building a bicycle is far more than just welding metal together; it is about breathing a "free soul" into each creation. From Tech Engineer to Torch Artisan
ORA: Let’s start from the very beginning. How did you transition from being a sales manager in the tech industry to a craftsman holding a welding torch?
Marc: I used to work as a sales manager at GIGABYTE. To be honest, stepping into frame building was a complete accident.
At the time, I had to take some time off work to recuperate from a herniated disc. My wife is quite petite—about 156 cm tall—and we could never find a bicycle that truly fit her frame. Since I happened to have some free time on my hands, I traveled to Taichung to learn welding, intending to build a bike for her myself.
Initially, I built two bikes. Afterward, my wife, my brother, and I took those bikes on a 12-day cycling tour around Taiwan, hitting almost every night market along the way. That journey completely transformed me. I fell head over heels in love with frame building.

A British frame builder had publicly claimed that Taiwan and China only care about "quantity" and have no understanding of "quality"—let alone what makes a truly exceptional bicycle. To be frank, it still bugs me to this day.
I wanted to stand up for Taiwan. That desire to prove him wrong was my biggest motivation for heading to the North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS) in 2019. I was determined to win an award. I wanted to prove to the world that Taiwan is absolutely capable of crafting world-class, top-tier handmade bicycles.
The Philosophy of Customization: Building Partners, Not Wall Art
ORA: Your custom bikes have always been highly sought after. Could you share what the process looks like when a client commissions a bike from you?
Marc: Truthfully, it is a very long process. The initial consultation and research phase alone usually takes over three months. I don’t just measure body dimensions; I want to understand the client's life.
- How do they ride?
- What are their future plans?
- What do they want to feel the moment they get on the saddle?
My goal is to build a comfortable, stress-free "partner," not a rigid, cold racing machine.
Selecting frame materials is very much like ordering a custom suit. You wouldn't wear a heavy wool suit in the summer, right? Similarly, the frame materials and tube dimensions must be tailored to the actual purpose and riding environment.
And I actually have a strict rule now: I turn down orders if the person just wants to hang the bike on a wall as a piece of art. I really believe a good bike needs to be ridden. It needs to get scratched, get dirty, and carry the memories of the places the rider has been. That’s where its true value is.
Craft vs. Manufacturing: The 80% vs. 120% Trade-Off
ORA: We completely agree with that. Let’s talk engineering design. As an independent builder, how does your design mindset differ from that of a mass-production factory?
Marc: I call it the "80% vs. 120% Rule."
As a custom frame builder, I know my clients intimately. I know their riding habits, weight, physical conditions, and limits. Therefore, I can confidently push the material performance closer to the edge. I might design up to only 80% or 90% of the material's maximum yield strength because I know that specific rider will never exceed that threshold.
Factories operate differently:
- The Factory's Challenge: A factory has no idea who will eventually buy that bike off the shop floor.
- The Solution: They must design for the absolute worst-case scenario. They have to over-engineer the product to 120% strength to ensure it remains perfectly safe under any unpredictable condition.
A great example of this was when I worked with ORA to develop a 3D-printed part. I wanted to add an internal protruding support structure inside the tube. However, the Chairman of ORA advised against it.
From a manufacturing standpoint, he explained that this design would disrupt the smooth flow of argon gas during welding, which could lead to dangerous residual stress at the joints. I absolutely love these kinds of candid, highly technical discussions. It shows that when you have an exceptional manufacturing partner, both sides can engage in a real dialogue to find the sweet spot between innovative design and structural safety.
From a Solitary Studio to a Robust Partnership with ORA
ORA: That’s exactly what we aim for. So, how has teaming up with ORA helped you as an independent builder?
Marc: To be completely honest, being an independent custom frame builder in Taiwan can be incredibly lonely. For a long time, I had no one to talk to about technical bottlenecks or business challenges. ORA became my vital sounding board.
Beyond just providing technical advice, what matters even more is supply chain security.
Not long ago, Paragon Machine Works, a major international component supplier, ceased operations. Custom builders worldwide panicked. Yet, I was barely affected. ORA has consistently and reliably supplied critical components like dropouts, head tubes, and bottom brackets. Even their selection of custom tubing specifications is more comprehensive than what many overseas suppliers offer. Having ORA backing me up gives me immense peace of mind.
The Future: Redefining "Mass Production" as "Ready-Made"
ORA: What is the next for io̍klîn frameworks?
Marc: Moving forward, in addition to our fully Made-to-Order builds, I will be offering small-batch production frames. However, I don't really like the term "mass production."

I’m not doing this to dilute the brand's value, nor am I looking to compete on price. The reality is that our current waiting list is over a year and a half long. Personally, I think that is too long. My goal is to bring that wait time down to around six months.
I want people who truly connect with the io̍klîn ethos to be able to ride our bikes and join our culture sooner—without us having to compromise our brand identity or product quality.
